Developing our "moral good taste"

I liked particularly this sentence because I believe it is a process to build up this conscience that will help you decide which things you despise and which others you side with.

I related this "moral good taste" with the snap reactions or decisions we take when a situation shock us.

When I see that somone or even me is not treated "fairly" I cannot help reacting: weather it is disrespect, violence or any kind of injustice that contradicts my beliefs.

Nowadays, students seem not to know or care about how to treat their mates, family or teachers.

As teachers, we cannot just sit there and watch it happen. If our "moral good sense" is switched on, we have to react. We should try to show our students (maybe by giving the example) how to treat the ones that surround you and at least we give them a taste of our "moral good taste".

I really like this idea of giving others "a taste of our (good) moral taste", Romi!

What I don't agree with is the idea that students today don't care about how they treat others or are treated... In my experience, on the contrary, they're so used to being "neglected" that they don't know how to react to somebody noticing them! :-P More often than not, "indifference" is a way to protect ourselves from getting hurt, don't you think?

Warmly,
Gladys

It´s true, Gladys! Now that I come to think about it, we more often than not react with indifference as a way of protecting us or even as the result of not knowing how to react. Probably, is not that students don´t care but they don´t know how to treat others.
This is one of the many other tasks the teacher has to fill in by giving the example. Isn´t this right?

Well, Romina has recently been discussing something along these lines here (see her comment on June 2oth)... Join her and share thoughts!
