Rita uses a couple of expressions to emphasize how important the course is to her:
-"(I´m) Busy finding meself"
-" I´ve begun to find me"
-(to Frank) - " You give me room to breathe"
- " You just , like feed me without expectin´anythin´in return"
-(about Literature) " It´s providing me with life itself"
-" Coming here, doing this, it´s given me more life than I ´ve had in years, an´he (Denny) should be able to see that"
- " If it´s all in my head, he (Denny) can´t touch it"
What I loved about this Scene, is the fact that in this struggle for starting to work, the roles changed. In this scene, Frank is the one that wants to talk about personal problems, he wants to get involved in Rita´s life to find a way to help her. Contrary to what I may expect, Rita wants to start working right away, she doesn´t want to be affected by her situation, she doesn´t want to give Denny the satisfaction of having succeed in getting Rita distracted.
I like her last quote: " If it´s all in my head, he can´t touch it". It is dead true. Nobody can get into our mind but ourselves. Fortunately, our thoughts are ours only.
Act 1, Scene 5 - Question 1

Why would focussing on the subject-matter be more productive (educational) than discussing "personal problems", Romi? And why, do you think, Denny might want to get Rita "distracted"? Couldn't he answer back that she's already been too "distracted" from the things that actually matter (in his eyes, at least) since she's started taking these lessons?
Any way, your thoughts are in your head... so I can't touch them... or can I?
Peace,
Naughty teacher
Jjajajajaja, I don´t know if you can ACTUALLY touch them Gla, but you certainly move them around!
I never said that focussing on the subject-matter was more productive than discussing personal problems, no way!
I think, in this case, Frank was right when he said that that class should be focused on the personal problems Rita had rather than the subject-matter.
You cannot say that sometimes, there is too much digression in Rita´s and Frank´s classes.
However, in this case, I supported the idea of discussing her personal problems which could have helped her focus on the subject matter later on.
I think Denny wants get Rita "distracted" so that she starts getting focused on what actually matters (in his eyes).
He would probably answer back, what you said Gla. But that won´t stop Rita, will it?
Kisses,
Ro
